This past week we received an update from John Mukolwe, a Social Innovator who has been part of development work in a village called Engikaret. For years the Engikaret clinic has been operating only when they could afford to bring in a doctor and supplies. Women and children would walk for five or six hours just for the chance to be seen by a doctor on the right day.
Now, John wanted to share the good news with us – the clinic in Engikaret will be operating daily in just a few weeks!
John writes: Work on the renovation of the medical unit is complete and we have met all government requirements. We have also been able to purchase all the required hospital furniture and equipment, and installed solar to power the facility. The medics have also been hired and both the district and regional ministry of help has approved all the above with small adjustments. We are working on the online registration application and hopefully we are good to go by the end of March/beginning of April God willing. Actually once the online application is submitted we can apply for a temporary permit from the regional health office to begin providing health services.
We are so excited that at last the vision is coming to fruition. This will be a huge relief for the vulnerable women and children with limited/ zero access to healthcare in the larger Masai land and beyond.
