Loom: Tell us a little about yourselves
Ed & Kay: Kay was raised by missionary parents in Africa and Ed was born and raised in California. We married in 1973, and eventually joined Youth with a Mission in 1987 and our lives have taken us all around the world. We have four children and 12 grandchildren who are the loves of our lives! We enjoy shopping at flea markets for old wood furniture pieces together. Kay haggles for the best price and Ed refinishes the pieces. Ed also likes gardening and playing video games with his grandkids. Kay enjoys reading, collecting and making miniatures for her dollhouse and will always be a recipe collector.
L: How did you first start working with Loom?
E & K: We were part of an original group in Kona, Hawaii in the early 2000’s that started the Children at Risk Network. We joined together with Janna and others and our common passion was to serve children at risk and those who were their caregivers. This group morphed and grew over the years and eventually became Loom and we are as committed as ever to the call of God to serve the widow and orphan in whatever capacity we can.
L: What are you passionate about?
E & K: We both love to work with people and bring out the best in them. This month we signed up for a coaching training that we’re incredibly excited about. FOCOS is a foundational coaching skills training and we’re really looking forward to going through the program and then being able to use the skills we learn to coach Local Experts around the world as they serve the vulnerable. Our hearts are captured by seeing others fully equipped to serve children at risk and we see this as one way we can be a resource and support for our partners.
L: What is something you have learned or that has stayed with you in your work with Loom over the years?
E & K: The fact that just one committed adult can have such an amazing impact on a child. The level of commitment our Local Experts have to the children they serve thrills us.
L: Who or what inspires you?
E & K: We’re inspired when we can see “the lights go on” for Celebrating Children Workshop participants. We’re inspired by the beauty in the faces of so many participants world wide.
